In Silencing Science (BWB, 2016), Professor Hendy recommended that New Zealand establishes a Parliamentary Commission for Science, modelled on the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment.

But - is such a Commission (or Commissioner) necessary?
What is the problem to be solved or mitigated?
What might such a Commission do?
And how would a Science Commission that reported to Parliament relate to existing institutions and advisory agencies, such as the Royal Society of NZ, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor and key government departments?
