Ticket Information:

If you love French cooking and Impressionist painting, you’ll love our series of one-day workshops, with a different artist featured in each session.

You’ll explore French Impressionism, and celebrate the good life so joyously captured by the Impressionists, with hands-on cooking workshops led by your tutor who is both a professional chef and an art historian. Join one workshop or all eight over the course of the year – once you’ve done one, you’ll be sure to want to do more!

This year’s series includes all-new material and new artists after last year’s very popular sell-out workshops. (Listen to Wendy's 2016 interview with Kathryn Ryan from RNZ's "Nine to Noon" programme here.)

Berthe Morisot
When George Moore claimed that Impressionism was invented in the cafés and bars of Paris, he might have mentioned that one of the finest painters of the movement never set foot in one. Berthe came from a well-off professional family that encouraged her talent when female artists were more often discouraged, demeaned, and ridiculed - and prevented from gathering in public drinking establishments.

Because of her gender, the ‘’acceptable’’ sorts of subject matter available to her were scenes of domestic harmony, women and children in everyday situations: the maid mixing a sauce in the family dining room, scenes of parks and gardens and landscapes done on holiday.

It's unlikely that Morisot had either the time or the inclination to enjoy pottering in the kitchen like Toulouse-Lautrec, but she certainly organised elegant Thursday dinners where guests praised her ‘’Mexican rice” and chicken with dates, which we'll make in this workshop, with chocolate pots for dessert.

All ingredients provided but bring an apron, tea towels and a dish cloth and containers to take any leftovers home.
