Are you and your neighbours prepared for anything?

On February 12th from 3-6pm groups of neighbours, friends, whanau and clubs are invited to put their disaster preparedness to the test by taking part in the Waikanae Beach Civil Defence Challenge. The event morphs Top Town, The Great Race and Survivor promising to be an afternoon of fun for teams and spectators.

The event is on Waikanae Beach, using the access opposite Waimea Cafe at the beach carpark at the end of Waimea Rd.

Addressing the theme of Civil Defence there will be short-fire challenges that address the five Critical Needs of a disaster:
- Checking on people and damage
- Medical assistance
- Shelter
- Water
- Food

Challenges will include:
- Foraging to build maps of your neighbourhoods on the beach
- Beach races
- Survival skills including building an emergency loo

Sign-up your group of six or more people to come along to the beach in front of outside Waimea Cafe to compete against other Kāpiti neighbours including this year’s Greener Neighbourhood groups. Children are welcome to take part in teams - activities are most suitable for 8-year-old's and over.

It's a family-friendly afternoon winding up with a prizegiving and sausage sizzle. Onlookers are encouraged, come along to cheer on the teams!

Alongside the challenges, there will be giant games for the kids as well as Civil Defence and Sustainable Communities information and a preview of the Waikanae Beach Vision and Action document.
