Presenting well known classical tunes in a Jazz format.

Chris Dann is very well known to Manawatu jazz audiences as a versatile and entertaining pianist who is prepared to cross the boundaries of musical styles. He has appeared a number of times in the Te Manawa series with different performers including the Trio Bella ensemble, and on this occasion, he returns in a programme highlighting his pianistic talent.

Chris Dann was introduced to jazz music through attending a workshop by the Jamey Aebersold clinic which came to New Zealand in 1979. He studied classical music with Bruce Greenfield at the Wellington Polytechnic in the 1980's and was introduced to playing with a big-band with Bud Jones.

In this concert, Chris has re-formatted some well known classical pieces including a Beethoven sonata movement, Dvorak's Humoresque, the famous Paganini Caprice, Schumann's Traumerei, and Puccini's Nessun Dorma.

He is joined by three other distinguished musicians. Neville Lauridsen is a big-band leader and sound engineer. He will be heard playing bass on some tunes as well as doing some expressive flugelhorn playing.

Hayden Lauridsen is one of the most dynamic drummers that you will hear, not just in the usual 'loudness' expected of drums but also in his pianissimo playing and orchestration of sound.

Hannah Fang has been heard at Globe concerts playing in classical styles and in a recent baroque concert. However, she also plays more contemporary music with her electric violin, so she is used to music that morphs. In this concert however you will hear her usual virtuosity played on the normal violin.

Admission is by donation.
