The Cattlestops return with new album ‘Dance in The Rain’.

After almost a decade’s hiatus, local band The Cattlestops re-emerge with a new line-up and a new album. Originally formed on the Kapiti Coast back in 2005 The Cattlestops focussed on a country-rock and Western swing repertoire consisting mostly of original songs penned by bass player James Cameron and guitarist Andrew London.

Legendary Hamilton County Bluegrass Band fiddle player Colleen Trenwith provided a signature sound which, combined with fiery lead guitarist Dave Berry and drummer Evan Williams can be heard on two albums; 2005’s “Cattlestoppin" & 2007’s "Back to Rosetta Rd”.

The latter contributed significantly to the soundtrack of locally shot feature film ‘Second-Hand Wedding’ and was nominated as a finalist for Country Album of the Year. The band played Arts and Music festivals around New Zealand and featured at the Norfolk Island Country Festival in 2007.

The Cattlestops went into the recess around 2009, but Cameron and London continued to work together, often with other local musicians including Wayne Mason (keys), Ross McDermott (steel guitar), Lance Philip (drums) and guitarist Nick Granville. This new line-up has recorded 11 Cameron/London songs at Audiosuite studios in Paraparaumu, two of them boasting some wonderful vocals by Natalie Black of Rangiora, and one featuring original fiddler Colleen Trenwith.

The new album ‘Dance in the Rain’ shows both songwriters in the pensive and occasionally nostalgic mood, with genres ranging from rural acoustic country and J.J. Cale-style ’swamp’ grooves to driving blues and country rock reminiscent of B.B King and the Allman Brothers.

The Cattlestops Are
- James Cameron: Double Bass/Electric Bass/ and Vocals. From Glam Rock in the 70’s to Reel to Real in the 80’s to fronting his own swing trio, “The Velox Brothers” at Wellingtons Parkroyal Hotel for the best part of a decade, James, at 6’4”, is the only bass player in town who makes a double bass look small. And now with over 10 years with The Cattlestops.

- Andrew London: Guitar & Vocal. One of the busiest musicians in the Wellington region & well-known to National Radio (RadioNZ) listeners for his smooth renditions of jazz standards. Also fronts acoustic swing trio (The Andrew London Trio”) regulars at Jazz & Arts Festivals around NZ & Australia.

- Wayne Mason: Keyboards & BVs. One of the icons of the NZ music scene, Wayne Mason is a wonderful piano & organ player who plays with great feel and sensitivity as well as lighting a fire with his energetic solos. A fantastic addition to the band and his playing is a real feature of the new Cattlestops sound.

- Ross McDermott: Steel Guitar & BVs with the occasional spoons solo Ross has added great colour and atmosphere to our sound. Having recorded all 3 Cattlestops albums at his studio “Audiosuite”, he now features, playing on the new CD, “Dance in the Rain” on steel guitar, some great organ lines as well as guitar and BVs.

- Lance Philip: Drums & Percussion, One of the top drummers in the country, it is fabulous to have Lance anchor down our sound and establish and drive some wonderful grooves. Always supporting the overall feel of each song, Lance is also able to put his stamp on the songs with his sensitivity and creativity without needing to dominate the tunes.
