CBS Music

A new arts initiative for our city will be a mid-June Cathedral Arts Festival, centred on St Mary’s Catholic Pro-Cathedral, Manchester Street.

The opening concert by the CBS Choir & Orchestra features Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony and a beautiful setting by Mendelssohn of the Aquinas hymn: Lauda Sion. It is believed that this late work, written alongside Elijah, will be heard in NZ for the first time.

The patronal feast of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is celebrated on Sunday, June 18, with a 10:30 Solemn Mass including John Ritchie’s Missa Corpus Christi, and Hymn to the Blessed Sacrament by eminent Scottish composer Sir James MacMillan, who will appear at the Pro-Cathedral for a special function on 23 July.

That afternoon, the Royal School of Church Music will present an annual Music Sunday at 2pm, and the Kolbe Singers will contribute to a 5:30pm Choral Mass.

Local secondary schools involved in The Big Sing will provide gala concerts on Monday and Tuesday evenings, at 7pm, and the adjudicator, James Tibbles, presents a recital at 1:10pm on Wednesday, 21 June. That evening, the Schola Cantorum gives a 7pm concert including music by Victoria.

An architectural panel will discuss the artistic merits of city buildings on Tuesday at 5:30pm in the Music Centre, and a church & arts panel on Thursday at 5:30pm will consider whether the arts can justify any place in today’s church.

Raymond White, organ presents a recital on Friday 23 June, at 1:10pm, with soprano Rebecca Ryan, who will be a guest artist in the first performance outside Germany of a scholarly new edition of Mozart’s monumental C Minor Mass, the grand finale of the closing Festival Concert, at 7:30pm on Saturday, June 24th - celebrating the Feast of St John the Baptist, patron of the Christchurch Catholic Diocese.

A lasting reminder of the foundational beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church will be Palestrina’s Missa Tu Es Petrus at the 10:30am Solemn Mass on Sunday, June 25.

All are welcome to attend these events, with opportunities for informal social contact in the CBS Music Centre, and it is hoped that more arts activities will be encouraged to participate in the future.
