Want to demystify the art of glass casting? This workshop will cover the introductories of lost wax casting for glass cast using lead crystal glass. Students will learn how to work with wax or clay for 2D works and wax for 3D works.

The workshop includes all materials and up to 1kg of gaffer lead crystal to realise your work.

Students will work on their creations and learn how to work with wax or clay, as well as using master moulds to create new work. You will learn how to invest your work in wax, steaming out, weighing glass and colour placement in your work.

The workshops are held on a small lake in rural Waiuku, not far from Karioitahi Beach. Accommodation for those from out of town can be arranged through AirBnB, or motels, as well, there is Castaways Resort up the road on the fabulous sunset coast.

Students will bring their own lunch, aprons, tools and masks, however, Susan has tools you can use, if you do not have any of your own.

The workshops are extremely popular and Summer time is daylight saving time so much nicer weather on the lake.

You will be guided by the educator, Susan, on your work and modelling techniques. Once your work is invested and steamed out, the glass is loaded and your creation is fired. You will return a week later on the following Saturday to divest your work and learn basic techniques of cold working your new piece of cast glass. (10am until 1pm).

This workshop is 2.5 days.

Susan is a practising full time artist based in her studio in Waiuku, she has a font of knowledge of basic casting concepts which she will gladly pass on to her students. Her evaluations from courses in the past have been 5 (evaluation ratings from 1-5 - 1 being poor or unsatisfactory, 5 being excellent and met the objectives of the workshops).

Susan has been responsible for the past four years bringing glass to the Franklin region and bringing awareness of glass art to the region since late 2013.

You can find out more about the workshop via email and for a registration form.
