Through our arts, we express our language, culture, and history.

Over two days, Ngāti Toa Rangatira carvers demonstrate their skills. Their biggest piece is a pou whakairo (carved pole) three metres high. It will be given to Te Papa as a symbol of the local iwi’s (tribe’s) enduring relationship with the museum. It will also mark the end of Ngāti Toa’s exhibition Whiti Te Rā! and their time as iwi in residence at Te Papa.

The pou will stand on the marae ātea (forecourt) of Te Marae when it is finished.
