29 years ago, on 1 July 1988, the government announced that it had agreed to the Waitangi Tribunal’s recommendation that Takaparawhā (Bastion Point) on the southern shore of Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour be returned to local iwi Ngāti Whātua.

This documentary examines the rich and tragic history of Bastion Point/Takaparawhā — including how questionable methods were used to gradually take the land from Māori, while basic amenities were withheld from those remaining. and the en masse arrival of police and the army to remove the protesters.

Featuring extensive interviews with protest leader Joe Hawke, and footage from seminal documentary Bastion Point Day 507, Bastion Point: The Untold Story recalls the struggle for land rights in 20th-century New Zealand.

This screening is part of Te Manawa's Topp Twins series of public programmes to accompany the Topp Twins exhibition. Visit us to learn more about the Topp Twins' involvement in the Bastion Point protests.
