Come along to an artist talk with Juliann Smith and Ellie Lee-Duncan.

Gathering of the Animals explores issues around culture, identity and storytelling.

"Storytelling in the Cherokee culture is an oral tradition; the way that history is passed down, how lessons are taught, and how spiritual ceremonies unfold. Storytelling in the Western way of thinking is much more visual, with stories usually in a written form.

I am interested in how the two cultures can come together, with visual illustrations that suggest a narrative, but without the story written out for the viewer. In turns, it allows the viewer rich glimpses into stories, while resisting the Western expectation to have unlimited access to culturally specific knowledge removed from context. In order to fully understand the story, you still have to have a person to person contact, that willingness to take time and listen and learn." - Juliann Smith
