Anya Sinclair grew up in the Waitakere Ranges and now lives and works in Port Chalmers in a rambling, overgrown section by the sea. The bush is something she has returned to, in her life and in her painting, for at least as long as she can remember. Forest Lives is a solo exhibition of newly made works exploring the forest as a fictional environment in folklore and mythology.

"The function of the forest can turn on a dime, and we rely on the famous figures of folklore to tell us whether to feel safe or scared. If we remove these characters entirely and leave their wooded realms open to the viewer’s interpretation, which side of the coin do they land on? How much of that is painting, and how much of that is projection?" - Anya Sinclair
