Pondering painting in 2016, André Hemer wrote that painting today explores what it means to buy our shoes on Amazon. His art, with its integration of the digital and the handmade, captures something of that experience - embodying both seeing and experiencing.

As the exhibition title suggests these are paintings to be experienced viscerally in real life. Layered, luscious, flat and deeply textured, they combine hybrid modes of making with spray paint, acrylic, impasto and oil overlaid on open flat-bed scans of sky and outdoor natural imagery.

Here documentary and a visual imaginary combine in a sensuous and material representation of contemporary experience, which like all art speaks to its moment of making.

Bartley plus Company Art is proud to present André's sixth solo exhibition in the gallery. Now globally sought after, with recent solo exhibitions in London, Paris, Los Angeles and a forthcoming show in Singapore, Hemer has worked full-time as an artist since completing his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury in 2006. In early 2015 he completed a PhD in Fine Arts at the University of Sydney.

The first survey of his work, André Hemer: 2005 - 2015 was held at the Pātaka Art Museum in 2015. In 2016 he won two significant New Zealand awards, the Paramount Award in the Wallace Art Awards and an Arts Foundation New Generation Award. The Wallace Award includes a six-month residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York, which he will undertake later in 2017. André lives and works in Vienna, Austria.
