Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland.

This course runs over six consecutive Wednesday classes.

Join Mirian, a historian from University of Auckland, who will pull out the juiciest and most interesting facts and stories to introduce you to this most fascinating and influential ancient culture.

Course outline:
- Overview, Minoan and Mycenaean times.
- The Dark Ages and Orientalising periods.
- The Archaic period
- The Classical period 1
- The Classical period 2
- The Hellenistic period

During this course it is expected you will gain a broad knowledge of major events and leaders that shaped Athenian history, an understanding of the most famous dramas of the Classical period, the ability to differentiate between different art and architectural styles, gain a basic understanding of the religions, philosophies and social issues of the time and a clearer perspective of how the past shapes the present.
