9:00am - Shaabi Technique (Intermediate)

“Shaabi is the voice of the street, an urban expression full of feeling, double entendres, and social commentary. As a dance, Shaabi reflects a true and authentic expression of the Egyptian people and their humor and playfulness”. The word Shaabi or Sha’abi commonly means ‘folk’ or ‘popular (of the people)’ and refers mainly to the music and only more recently to the dance that has evolved from the music and it’s baladi origins. Shaabi music and dance style is reflective of the working class people in Egypt.

This technique workshop will cover:
- Shaabi posture and styling when doing our regular or foundation belly dance movements
- Gestures and meanings
- Costuming
- Shaabi Music and how it has sparked and shaped not only the dance style but the social climate in Egypt
- Combos

11:30pm - Shaabi Choreography (Advanced)
This choreography has lots of sass and fun masculine moments as we tell stories of boy meets girl in a nightclub in Cairo, compare apples and melons, and complain about our love life! We will learn some Egyptian gestures and incorporate them into the choreography.
