The Learning Connexion is pleased to bring you another term of inspiring and hands-on classes in the visual arts, here at our colourful campus in Taita, Wellington. Whether you're already an enrolled student or want to come along as a casual student, we're sure you'll find something to tempt you to explore your creativity, meet new people, and have some fun!

Storytelling with Pictures

Learn how to tell visual stories. Creating a photo essay with a camera will increase the depth and intensity of how you can approach different subjects - whether photographing, painting or using other forms of visual communication. Visual story telling is about the relationship that images have with one another.

NB: While a cellphone camera has limitations the class is aimed at the art of storytelling and may simply add to the challenge of looking further to show more.

Day 1
- Discussion of examples
- Story telling fundamentals: Beginning, middle and end and how tot take the viewer on a journey. The relationship images have to tell a whole story
- Compositional elements: tricks to create depth and power, positive/ negative space within the frame, foreground/background.
- Exploring angles to show more. Wide shots, mid shots, close ups explored
- Creating emotions to connect with viewer through focal length, lighting/exposure
- Task - Photo shoot

Day 2
- Editing explained and shots formed into a series of 5 images
- Collaborative and individual editing
- Shared discussion of photo essay results

- Learn how to tell stories visually
- Enhance the impact of your pictures
- Challenge the way you see before creating your images
- Optimise your cell phone camera as a communication tool

- Knowledge of how to create a photo essay
- A photo essay

- A digital camera - basic or advanced, or a phone with a built in camera (iPhone or Android)
- Good basic knowledge of how to use your chosen camera
- Fully charged battery (plus charger)
- Pen, pencil and paper
