Discover the history of New Zealand’s largest cemetery.

Learn about interesting grave sites, the cemetery’s ecology, the influenza epidemic, the iconography of headstones, the stories of people buried there and much more.

Go behind the scenes to find out how a cemetery works. See a grave-digging demonstration or tour the crematorium. You can also learn about natural burials, how to clean a grave or the burial practices of different cultures.

You will also have the opportunity to find a relative’s grave. Search the west burial records on the Auckland Council website beforehand, and bring their full name to the event and any other information you have such as birth and death dates.

There will also be food stalls, music and a vintage car display.

This event is the first of its kind at Waikumete and promises to be a fascinating day.

The event is being organised through a partnership between Waitākere Ranges Local Board, Friends of Waikumete, the Urupā Committee of the cemetery’s Māori burial ground, Auckland Council cemeteries team and Ancestry.

Transport:

Instead of driving, why not take the train to Glen Eden.

To get around the cemetery, feel free to bring your bike.

A shuttle bus service will also be operating within the cemetery on the day.
