Upper Hutt Posse

A rare performance from Aoetaroa’s ground-breaking hip-hop progenitors Upper Hutt Posse with support from Auckland art-punkers The Coolies!

In their first outing since taking home the prestigious IMNZ Classic Record award at the Tatie Music Prize for their 1988 12” ‘E Tu’, Upper Hutt Posse will play a one-off show at Auckland’s Wine Cellar!

Since their inception in 1985, Dean Hapeta (also known as D Word or Te Kupu) and the Posse have been fighting racial injustice with the proud music of revolutionary thinking. The song’s of UHP were and remain songs of Aotearoa, taking ideals of protest and revolution and situating them in an explicitly local frame of reference. Their classic ‘E Tu’ is but one example of Upper Hutt Posse’s artistic and ideological commitment conscience, to music which rings true for all those who see the need for change.

This performance is presented in relation to Te Kupu’s exhibition ’Ngātahi – Know the Links’ which opens at 5:30 pm on Thursday 4 August at Audio Foundation.
