“With emphatic grand gestures and a distinctive, individual creative will, Lin has something Pied Piper-like... a polarizing young artist.” - Stuttgarter Nachrichten

Tony Chen Lin, Chamber Music New Zealand Encompass Series Tour 2016.

Celebrated young kiwi pianist returns for a national tour in September and October, performing in more than ten New Zealand centres as part of Chamber Music New Zealand’s 2016 Encompass Series. The concert in Rotorua is presented by the Rotorua Music Federation.

Dazzling young pianist and composer Tony Chen Lin was born in China and moved to New Zealand with his parents when he was six. His first encounter with music came at the age of twelve with keyboard lessons, before advancing to piano a year later with Rosemary Stott. At fourteen, Tony made his concerto debut after winning the Christchurch Junior Concerto Competition in 2002. Winner of the 40th New Zealand National Concerto Competition in 2007, Tony completed his Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours at the University of Canterbury in 2009, in piano performance with Péter Nagy, Gao Ping, and Judith Clark, and composition with Chris Cree Brown, Elaine Dobson, and Gao Ping.

After studying in Singapore for a short time, Tony gained a Master of Music under Gilead Mishory at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg in Germany in 2013. As part of his graduation concerts, Tony formed his own chamber orchestra to perform, as well as conduct, a Mozart Piano Concerto from the piano. Tony recently graduated with Distinction from a Soloist Diploma (Konzertexamen) in Freiburg under Andreas Immer, while taking part-time studies with Balázs Szokolay at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. Since 2009 Tony has been regularly invited as a young artist by festival founder and mentor Edith Fischer at the 'Semaine Internationale de Piano et de musiques de Chambre' in Switzerland, where he will be making an appearance this year as conductor. Recent highlights include performances of Bartók’s First Piano Concerto in Freiburg, as well as appearing in the “Rising Stars!” Festival in 2015, performing as a soloist with the Stuttgart State Orchestra.

On this tour, Tony will be performing masterworks of the piano repertoire by Bach, Bartok and Schubert alongside his very own composition penned especially for this tour. Find out more about this multi-faceted artist here: https://tonychenlin.com/.

Tickets are available at the Concert Chamber desk from 7 pm on the night, cash or cheque only please (no EFTPOS/Credit Card facilities available). For more information visit the website.
