The German philosopher Goethe talked about ‘delicate empiricism’ – he was talking about the effort to understand a thing’s meaning though “prolonged empathetic looking and seeing grounded in direct experience”.

He wanted to distill an object or emotion down to its essence, to encounter the thing through perception – in other words to use the senses to understand something – which is what empiricism is.

Distilling something down to its essence is what abstraction is about. You have to ‘know’ something in its purest form before you can abstract from it.

In total silence you can find quite electric relationships between things – these things can be objects, thoughts, even words – whatever they are we just have to give them time to present themselves.

“This is what I am trying to achieve in these exhibited works” explains Ruxton.
