The Mutes (from mars) is a unique rock / pop band - the only one in New Zealand that harnesses the incredible talents of a group of musicians who have a variety of intellectual challenges. This creative mixed-ability crew of seven musos whose ‘disabilities’ range from Aspergers to Down Syndrome, Foetal Alcohol to Brain Injury, which rather than diminishing their abilities, enhance their creative talent.

On any night, this band can foot it with most local groups. The Mutes encompass three songwriters so the music ranges from originals through to classic rock from bands like the Rolling Stones and the Kinks.

The band amongst other things have:
• Toured twice in NZ with Australian band Rudely Interrupted
• Played the Whangamata Beach Hop
• Toured the upper half of the North Island twice as part of Idea Services ‘Idea’s Got Great Talent’ and were the featured guest act at the finals of the contest in 2013.
- Played at the 2014 Attitude Awards in Auckland
- Opened New Zealand Music Month on TV One’s flagship show Seven Sharp with a filmed gig at Grey Lynn’s RSC.
- Run Making a Difference workshops and performances with Touch Compass in local high schools to change attitudes and behaviours to people with disability in 2014 and 2015.
- Attitude Films have produced two documentaries in 2012 and 2014 on the band and its members both of which have been shown on TV One.

The Watts comprise, Andy Hodgins, Samuel Benge, David Milton and John Michealz. All are full time musicians living in Auckland and Northland with a mutual love for music along the lines of The Band, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, JJ Cale to name a few. Sam, John and Andy are all multi instrumentalists and singers. Worth mentioning is that the band is recording in a Morningside bungalow on all vintage analog reel to reel recording equipment. All the guys have toured and recorded extensively both here and abroad.
