Unitec Theatre

By Maxim Gorky / Directed by Elena Stejko
Featuring Unitec’s 2016 Year 3 Acting Students

Synopsis:
In the poisonous air of a basement-lodging house in Russia, the lost and brutalised find themselves in common living quarters. The fallen aristocrat, the thief and gambler cling to whatever hope they may offer each other. Russian playwright Maxim Gorky’s play The Lower Depths has survived over 100 years to become a classic, and under the tutelage of the rigorous and visionary Elena Stejko, Unitec’s third year acting students immerse themselves in this world of shattered dreams and desperation. And yet, amongst the rubble of broken promises and cynicism, there exists humanity and belief in a better life. Powerful drama from eighteen students, reveling in their talent and emerging abilities to create vivid characters and tell potent stories.
