Waste Not, Want Not: Water recycling at the Oceanwide Centre, San Francisco

Karl Wakelin, Associate at Stephenson &Turner NZ, was part of the Green Building team and LEED Consultant on the two million square foot Oceanwide Centre in San Francisco. As part of this he managed the incorporation of innovative greywater recycling. Karl will tell us about the project, challenges faced and he will break down some of the barriers to non-potable water reuse in buildings. He will also touch on case studies of different building types that resulted in alternative solutions for reusing water harvested onsite. View his bio.

London’s iconic City Hall

Bruce Curtain, National Technical Director – Architecture for Opus Architecture will tell us more about the City Hall in London (building image in banner above). Bruce worked on this landmark building when he worked for Foster + Partners, one of Britain's leading architects. This unusually shaped building has strong sustainable design principles; photovoltaics provide power and the building’s cooling system utilises ground water pumped up via boreholes. Offices are also naturally ventilated, and it only uses a quarter of the energy consumed by a typical air-conditioned office building in London. Bruce will share compelling insights and give an overview on the lessons learned. View his bio.

How a well-designed Green Star building produces a great NABERSNZ outcome.

Lincoln Fraser, Development Director – Newcrest, will explain how the NZI Centre, a 5 Star GreenStar building, attained a 5.5 star NABERSNZ rating – the only Auckland building to do so. The building’s innovative features include a double skin façade, triple-glazing, underfloor air delivery, automatically controlled blinds and exposed concrete ceilings to help moderate temperature, but a great green design isn’t always indicative of how well a building is operated or how energy efficient it is. Find out how Newcrest worked alongside the tenant to ensure a well-tuned and energy efficient building.
