The CBS Choir and Orchestra will celebrate the opening of their new CBS Music Centre with a concert on May 2016. As a traditional hymn of rejoicing, the Te Deum will be performed throughout the programme in settings by Attaignant, Charpentier and Mozart.

Mozart’s exuberant setting, written at the age of 13, shows much of his nascent genius, and will be a first NZ performance of the work. The Attaignant setting alternates the traditional plainchant with organ interludes, which will feature the versatile tone colours of the newly installed Rodgers Infinity Platinum organ, linked as a hybrid to the historic pipes. The instrument will be heard again accompanying the choir in Schubert’s 23rd Psalm and John Rutter’s O Clap Your Hands and with solo trumpets in Charpentier’s Prelude to his Te Deum.

The Cathedral Choir will also sing a newly rediscovered Veni Creator by Douglas Mews, and will also join the Cathedral Orchestra for Schubert’s youthful and melodic Mass in C Major. There will be a retiring collection, before adjourning to the neighbouring Music Centre for appropriate celebrations, and all are warmly welcome.

The Centre is to be developed as a diocesan focus for artistic and liturgical development and the CBS musicians have offered their full support to international fundraising efforts to support the regeneration of their beloved Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. They rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7.30 pm in the Centre, beside St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, where they sing each Sunday at the 10.30 am Solemn Choral Mass.

A number of vacancies exist for choral leaders within the group, who enjoy unique opportunities to perform solo roles in significant Mass and motet settings with the orchestra and choir. Leadership awards, and other scholarships, worth up to $3000 per year, are available to suitable applicants.

Those interested are invited to contact:
CBS Musical Director, Don Whelan - 358-5873.
