Join rugby historian Clive Akers on Sunday 8 May at 2pm for an in-depth, personal retelling of his experiences including lessons learned in creating and researching his book Balls, Bullets and Boots. Including how the relationship with the Rugby Museum developed to deliver the hugely successful touring exhibit of the same name – Balls, Bullets and Boots: from Rugby Field to Battlefield.

An Opiki based farmer and avid rugby fan with a household of daughters, Akers may have found it difficult integrating his passion for the game, had it not been for his strength of research and statistical skill, which came to the fore during the development of his e-book.

As co-editor of the Rugby Almanac since 1995, Akers was well placed to forge and nurture a relationship with the Rugby Museum that as it turned out, had a strong impact on the development of his book and the creation of Balls, Bullets and Boots the exhibition.

Developed and toured by the New Zealand Rugby Museum, Balls, Bullets and Boots (the exhibition) is based on Akers research and explores the impact hostilities had on New Zealand’s pre-war signature sport and its sportspeople.

Balls, Bullets and Boots tells the story of how the lives, loves and communities of XV rugby players and a pioneering female coach were forever changed by war and illustrates the breadth of wartime experiences common to all New Zealanders.

Entry to this event is included with Museum admission, which is free for locals with relevant ID. General Museum admission: Adults $20, seniors $18 and children $8.
