Music and stories by the sea is the perfect way to spend time with mum this mother’s day.

The NZ Maritime Museum will be kicking off their new winter music programme with music, art, stories and afternoon tea. This event will be hosted in the Edmiston Gallery, currently home to the Once Upon an Ocean exhibition, which tells stories of exploration, immigration and imagination.

The afternoon event will open with the launch of Waiheke author, Nora West’s latest book A Change of Air. West will give a reading of the family saga which chronicles the journey from Edwardian England to Waiheke Island.

A Change of Air combines West’s family story with actual events from 1913 woven together. The author spent time researching in the Museum’s Bill Laxon Maritime Library so she could accurately describe a typical voyage from the UK to New Zealand on a steamship in 1913. This was based on published and manuscript accounts of personal voyages.

Meanwhile Devonport folk musician Chris Priestly will perform songs from his new album Rogue as well as from his renowned album Unsung Heroes, which features the stories of colourful characters from New Zealand’s wild colonial past. Priestly has been involved in the Auckland folk music scene for more than 30 years and Unsung Heroes was a folk category finalist at the 2013 Tui Awards.

To keep younger ones entertained, the interactive Once Upon an Ocean: Stories in TapeArt exhibition provides them with the opportunity to make their own TapeArt creation with the museum’s friendly hosts throughout the day.

And for some fresh May air, head out sailing on the museum’s heritage scow, Ted Ashby. The one hour sailing experiences are at 12pm and 2pm, and there will be a special offer for mums on the day of two tickets for the price of one.
