This talk on St Martin de Porres will be presented by Sr Carmel Walsh OP.

St Martin de Porres (1579-1639) was born in Lima, Peru; the illegitimate son of a Spanish gentleman and a freed slave. At that time in Peru all those of African or Indian descent were not allowed to become full members of religious orders so St Martin asked the Dominicans of Holy Rosary Priory in Lima to accept him as a volunteer. At the Priory, Martin worked as a barber, a healer, in the kitchen, as well as doing laundry and cleaning.

He was eventually allowed to take vows as a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic by the prior who disregarded the law. St Martin gained renown as a healer and was praised for his unconditional care of all people, regardless of race or wealth.

This talk is part of the series Seeking Truth: Celebrating 800 Years of Dominican Life.

Cost: A koha/donation is invited to help us cover our costs.
