You can join sesshin any time up until Friday evening.

Sesshin is unique to the Zen tradition. Characterised by silence and deep introspection, sesshin is recommended to anyone who is sincerely interested in experiencing intensive Zen training and deepening their meditation practice. Sesshin is an unbroken stream of aware spiritual practice. We wake up each day before dawn to begin a schedule that includes 7 to 10 hours of zazen, chanting services, formal silent meals in the zendo (oryoki), silent work practice, and talks by the teacher and senior students. Sesshin is an opportunity to receive personal guidance in private interviews with the teacher, draw from the tremendous strength of people practising together and experience the deep stillness that lies within each one of us.

The Mountains and Rivers Order offers week-long sesshins in New Zealand in January and July each year. The July sesshin is led by Geoffrey Shugen Arnold, Sensei, the Abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery. Shugen Sensei has been visiting New Zealand to offer retreats since 1987.

Because sesshin is a very intensive retreat, those wishing to attend should have experience in meditation. Those who have never participated in sesshin or who are newer to Zen practice should plan on beginning with the Friday-Sunday portion of the retreat. Most sesshins may be joined in progress as late as Friday evening. To establish their readiness for the intensity of the schedule, first-time sesshin participants will be interviewed by phone as part of the registration process.

Shugen Sensei is the Head of the Mountains and Rivers Order, abbot and resident teacher of Zen Mountain Monastery, and abbot of the Zen Center of New York City. Shugen Sensei has been in full-time residential training since 1986; he received dharma transmission from Daido Roshi in 1997. While he lives primarily at the Monastery, he shares his time between there and the Zen Center of New York City. He has visited New Zealand to conduct Zen events for many years, and currently offers a programme in Nelson each July.
