A special compilation of film, music, speeches and live radio recordings tell a story of the lives of Cantabrians.

This programme of film and sound recordings illustrates a range of big events from Christchurch’s history.

Film highlights include:
- The French landing in Akaroa (dramatised in a 1922 feature film)
- the city's farewells to Antarctica explorers, Lieutenant Shackleton (1908) and Robert Byrd (1928)
- World War One troops are seen marching through city streets in 1914
- Many glimpses of Cathedral Square, the city’s trams and architecture that did not survive the earthquakes
- Films of Canterbury social life, including the Christchurch Cinema's annual staff frolic at the Wintergarden in 1935

Sound recordings accompanying the films include:
- A early recording by Lieutenant Shackleton on the British Antarctic Expedition in 1908
- Jazz recordings made at local clubs and concerts of the 1950s
- A wonderful NZBC commentary on the Queen’s visit of 1954
- A documentary on the Wizard and other Cathedral Square characters in the 1980s
