Tchaikovsky’s passionate fantasy-overture ‘Romeo and Juliet’ sets the scene for Bay of Plenty Symphonia’s final concert of 2016.

The romantic theme continues with the rarely heard Tuba Concerto in F-minor by Ralph Vaughan Williams, featuring soloist Tak Chun Lai, recently appointed Principal Tuba with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Lai brings his international experience to show off the surprisingly virtuosic capabilities of this large brass instrument, although the tuba also has beautiful lyrical qualities, particularly well expressed in the second movement Romanza.

Dvorak’s 8th Symphony completes the programme. Written in the middle of the romantic period, this cheerful and optimistic work draws its inspiration from the composer’s love of Bohemian folk music.
