What: Each year New Zealand accepts 750 refugees as part of an agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees, whereby their status has been ‘mandated’ or authenticated by the UNHCR. Porirua has been a major hub for this community and has worked to support them through their transition into Kiwi life.

For Cultural Diversity Day we want to honour those Kiwi’s with refugee backgrounds now living in Porirua and the organisations that serve them by having a night focused on refugee stories. This event will bring together the Porirua City Council, New Zealand Red Cross, Volunteer Porirua, English Language Partners Porirua and Porirua Language Project- Literacy Aotearoa in an effort to raise awareness of their work for this community and of how people can get involved. This will be on the same evening as the Porirua Night Market where multi-cultural food trucks will be serving a variety of delights and live music will be played by local artists.

Attendees are asked to bring a shared plate from their cultural background to share during the event. A ‘Kia Ora’ colouring competition is also in place in the community and the winners will be chosen for the 2-5, 6-10 and 11-16 age groups with prizes being provided by local businesses.

Who: Porirua City Council, Porirua Chamber of Commerce, New Zealand Red Cross, Volunteer Porirua, English Language Partners Porirua and Porirua Language Project- Literacy Aotearoa, with attendees from across the community and prizes from local businesses.
