A profusion of something is a surge - an extravagant abundance of that thing; a term that illustrates well the working method of Melser who attempts to try and uncover some of the undetermined and invisible organic growth patterns at work in nature.

For Melser, painting can be compared to either observing a virus or bacteria under the microscope or brushing away the dirt from around a new archaeological find. It is exploration and discovery that motivates him, a belief that in his alchemical meanderings, magic and wonder will appear just as it did with developing black and white photography of yesteryear. He has spoken of “organic biomorphism” as a style that might categorise his process.
