This exhibition brings together a group of potters, clay workers, ceramic and multi-media artists from Coromandel to Taupo, with a lifetime of experience in using clay, whether it is for function, inspiration, income or an excuse for Playing with Fire.

Most potters, clay workers and ceramic artists have one thing in common, the need to finish their work, to make it lasting, durable, to hold tea and toast, or to withstand the elements. Colour, surface texture and the feel of the finished piece are also vital to the ceramic process whether it’s a coffee mug or a garden sculpture, and the thing that cements that process is fire. The process can include chemistry and physics, and to know when to call an electrician or how to sharpen a chainsaw. We dig clay out of the ground in Coromandel or buy it ready-made, packed in plastic and sold by the tonne. The firing uses wood, gas, diesel, electricity, or even sump oil, and it is our own approach to these variables that makes our work unique and personal.

Playing with Fire features the work of Charade Honey, Duncan Shearer, Elsa Lye, E M Mertens, Fiona Tunnicliffe, Janet Smith, Louis Kittleson, Maureen Alison and Ross Palmer.
