  • Free Admission

This event is part of Conservation Week 2016.

Meet at the DOC carpark at Petersons Road, Apiti (approximately one hr 15 min drive from Palmerston North) Back at carpark around 3:30 pm.

We’ll have a quick briefing from Janet Wilson, chair of the Ruahine Whio Protection Trust and volunteer co-ordinator for the Oroua and Pohangina Whio Protectors. Then we’ll walk down the hill and into the beautiful beech forest of the Ruahine Forest Park. We’ll follow the track up to Alice Nash Memorial Hut, checking the stoat traps as we go (and Janet promises we will see at least one stoat). Then we’ll stop at the hut for a snack, before continuing down the track to the Oroua River and campsite for lunch. Then it will be back up the track and the hill to Petersons Road carpark.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in a fun and easy family day trip or an introduction to becoming a trap-checking who volunteer. There is a biggish hill to climb getting back to the carpark at the end of the day, so a moderate level of fitness is required.

Bring: some snack food, your lunch, drink, tramping boots or sturdy shoes (we expect some mud on the track), a raincoat, warm clothes including a warm hat, and any personal medication you require. If you have some binoculars, bring those as we should see some bush birds and if we are very lucky, maybe a whio.

If you’re interested in attending, please text Janet on 027 341 8945 by Friday 16th Sept.

You need to make your own way to the carpark but it may be possible for some people to share transport if you contact Janet early in the week prior.
