For 2016 the OneChance Youth Project (OCYP) students’ project outline is to plan, deliver and evaluate a Youth Development Project (YDP).

This is festival is to celebrate of NZ Youth Week and NZ Music Month with an aim the students brainstormed as;
‘To plan an interactive music festival to give back to the youth in a fun and safe environment’.

To achieve the project objectives, students’ split themselves into three management teams; Venue, Entertainment, and Promotions. This presents opportunities to exercise leadership styles, leadership skills and communication skills individually but also within their three teams, it builds their confidence and public speaking skills as well as creating a positive dynamic work ethic.

Some of the student’s tasks include; contacting and securing New Zealand and local bands, singers, dancers, finding up to 15 food and refreshment stalls, securing five to six entertainment rides including bouncy castles, bouncy slides and merry-go-rounds and approaching local businesses for prizes. The students will also find and manage a 30 strong youth volunteer team from other youth organisations which will foster an effective attitude towards serving others and active citizenship. They have a workbook with certain tasks they must complete to pass the course with some tasks being; evaluate the event, survey participants and volunteer team, design a group presentation about their involvement in the project/festival. The workbook is also their evidence required to gain their 10 NCEA level three credits.

The OneChance Youth Project is an intensive leadership and event planning programme designed for youth development and empowerment. The students are handpicked by their teachers to attend a selection interview and if successful will participate in the proceeding project.

The OCYP is all about empowering young people to help conceive a passion to serve their communities in a powerful and positive way. Their newly acquired entrepreneurial skills will be used for the rest of their lives and assist in paving a possible career path. We have a passion to see our young people reach their full potential and the OCYP has been designed to do just that with our Mission Statement being;

‘To inspire young potential leaders to achieve their dreams and goals whilst inspiring others by giving the students a real-life business-like experience.’

To achieve the mission statement we have six key areas we concentrate on represented by six koru; leadership, team-building, communication, self-confidence, public speaking and event planning. For the event planning process we establish four important work ethic skills; focus, follow up, a sense of urgency and again communication.

Along the journey we take the students away on two weekend team-building trips which include a high ropes course, Waka Ama, a Master Chef competition and/or a Mount Maunganui fun boot camp with a search and rescue exercise.

During the course the students personally meet, greet and interact with Rotorua’s Mayor Steve Chadwick, local MP’s and councillors, other city leaders, motivational speakers, industry professionals and celebrities. They practice their public speaking at their respective school assemblies to promote their event, deal with and be interviewed by local media - which is a great confidence booster.

We promote fun team building activities each course day and it is the responsibility of the day course leaders to invent a game during their morning tea break.
