Wairarapa Parent’s Centre will host ‘Of Storks and Cabbage Patches,’ a preschool sexuality education seminar for parents and caregivers presented by body and gender educator Rachel Hansen on Monday, May 16, 7pm at Wairarapa REAP. Tickets are $15 (including supper) and can be purchased via wairarapa@parentscentre.org.nz or Eventfinda. Limited door sales will also be available.

The aim of the discussion is to demystify an important topic that can be an uncomfortable one and give parents and caregivers the tools to confidently deal with common situations. Questions are encouraged and the seminar will conclude with a Q&A session.

Rachel has qualifications in psychology and education and her Rachel Hansen: Good Talks programme offers a range of seminars for parents, teachers, and children of all ages. She believes sexuality education is part of a continuum that starts at birth and continues through life.

“Sexuality is a topic many parents prefer to avoid, but a child’s sexuality education begins with their curiosity about his or her body – and this starts well before they utter their first word. Children are constantly figuring out how the world works - this includes what their body parts are for, what they feel like and what they are called.
Parents should not be worried about how and when they are going to have the big talk. Instead they should think of it as an ongoing conversation, and it is never too early to start this conversation”.
