The NZSM Orchestra, conducted by Kenneth Young, presents:

Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony (No. 8)
Verdi – Overture to La Forza del Destino (Force of Destiny)
Butterworth – The Banks of Green Willow
Scharwenka – Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor (Rafaella Garlick-Grice, piano)

Schubert's 'Unfinished' Symphony was started in 1822 but only two movements were completed—though he lived for another six years. To this day, musicologists still disagree as to why Schubert failed to complete the symphony.

In a performance of Verdi's La Forza del Destino at the Met Opera in 1960, the American baritone Leonard Warren was about to launch into an aria which begins "Morir, tremenda cosa" ("to die, a momentous thing"), when he went silent and fell face-forward to the floor. A few minutes later he was pronounced dead of a massive cerebral hemorrhage, and the rest of the performance was cancelled.

George Butterworth was an English composer who showed real talent that might have flourished but for his early death, at age 31, in the battlefields of the First World War. The Banks of Green Willow was described by its composer as an "Idyll", and is scored for a small orchestra.

Rounding off our unfinished business, Rafaella Garlick-Grice will perform Scharwenka's Piano Concerto No. 2, bringing this little known composer to our attention and reminding us that the business of musical discovery is never complete.

NZSM staff, students and alumni, and IRMT members and their pupils have free entry to this concert.
NB: There will be $25/ $15 tickets available on the door via eftpos only (no cash).
