WaiBOP Football

For the first time, Cambridge will be the home ground for the best women footballers representing Waikato/Bay of Plenty when they take on teams from around the country in the 2016 National Women’s League.

Three top sides - Canterbury United Pride (who won the 2014 national title), Auckland (more national titles than any other team) and Wellington’s Capital squad - will play in Cambridge. Come along to John Kerkhof Park to see some of the country’s top players in action, including Football Ferns and members of the national U-20 and U-17 squads.

The fixtures scheduled for Cambridge will see WaiBOP meet Capital side, Auckland (Sunday, November 6) and Canterbury (Sunday, November 20).

The National League has seven teams - Northern, Auckland, WaiBOP, Central, Capital, Canterbury United Pride (formerly Mainland Pride) and Southern United – competing in a seven-round competition which opens on Sunday, October 16 and finishes with a grand final on Sunday, December 11.

It is the top women’s competition in the country and serves as an important step in the pathway to international football with a number of Football Ferns taking part in the three-month competition again this year. Most of the young women representing New Zealand at the U-17 World Cup in Jordan in September and the U-20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea in November are products of the National Women’s League.
