Hikule’o is a Tongan motif representing a female deity or prominent ancestor and this ancient figure resonates with artists Nathan Suniula and Ahota’e’iloa Toetu’u as they both have an ongoing interest in thinking about and trying to record the vastness of space and time through painting. The way both artists use space is a common thread with painterly forms that both hover in space or recede into the distance.

In this exhibition Hikule’o: Hue and Residue Suniula and Toetu’u offer a bold perspective on contemporary Pacific painting opening up a conversation and developing its language with hue, residue surface, support and colour.
