Jazz Gala - Borrowed, Blue, Old But New

This unique concert format presents a programme that fuses jazz, blues and pop. Rodger is redeveloping some classic New Zealand pop songs into jazz standards and has engaged three top pop/rock, jazz and blues artists exploring the crossover world of jazz and pop with The Rodger Fox Big Band.

Hollie Smith, cut her teeth performing with iconic locals Trinity Roots and Fat Freddy’s Drop, along with prominent Detroit DJRecloose. But it would prove to be call from celebrated Kiwi songwriter Don McGlashan (The Mutton Birds) in 2006 that would set her on the path to becoming New Zealand’s pre-eminent voice of soul.

Penned by Don and performed by Hollie, the single ‘Bathe in the River’ topped the charts, spending 22 weeks in the top 10. Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards saw her take home Best Female Solo Artist, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Best Aotearoa Roots Album and Best Producer.

Mark Williams, is a New Zealand-born pop/soul singer with Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ) number one hit singles, "Yesterday Was Just the Beginning of My Life" and a cover of Buddy Holly's "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" before he relocated to Australia. His single, "Show No Mercy" was a top ten hit in both countries.

He has undertaken extensive touring in support of numerous Australian bands and worked in television, in 2005 he became the vocalist for the reformed New Zealand/Australian band, Dragon. Hear Mark performing his hits Yesterday Was Just The Beginning Of My Life and April Sun In Cuba in new big band arrangements.

Debbie Harwood, creator of “When The Cat’s Away”, has established her own distinctive career. Growing up with her father’s collection of Stan Kenton albums and fond memories of sultry June Christy standards, Debbie will also be performing Jazz standards and a new big band version of one of her original compositions.

Erna Ferry is an iconic jazz and blues artist, having performed all New Zealand’s leading jazz festivals as well as appearances at the Monterey Jazz Festival and concerts in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Erna will perform her versions of Sharon O’Neill’s Maxine and Dave Dobbin’s Slice Of Heaven along with some classic blues with the big band. In March of this Erna’s 4th CD “Wild About You” was released.
