Duo Sonatas for violin and fortepiano with readings of letters penned by the Mozart family

Over the past 4 decades, Catherine Mackintosh has taken part in a fascinating era of discovery, pioneering many ground-breaking projects played for the first time on original instruments. After a conventional training at the Royal College of Music, Catherine took up the viol and baroque violin, attracted by the expressive possibilities that early instruments can bring to pre-classical repertoire. She was the leader of the Academy of Ancient Music, and directed the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment of which she is a founder member. Her extensive recordings have been widely acclaimed.

On this tour she will be presenting a programme of Mozart violin sonatas with well-known New Zealand organist, harpsichordist and fortepiano player, Douglas Mews. Douglas is a freelance musician in Wellington, teaching organ and harpsichord at the New Zealand School of Music. He graduated from Auckland University with a M.Mus in organ and harpsichord, followed by two years' post-graduate harpsichord study with Bob van Asperen at the Hague Conservatorium. As harpsichordist he has given many recitals in NZ as well as performing with various visiting musicians, including baroque violinist Stanley Ritchie, early flautist Rachel Brown, singer Richard Wistreich, recorder player Peter Holtslag, and violist Nobuko Imai.
