The popular Mayor’s Music Matinee kicked off again in May to great success, with the New Zealand Chamber Soloists taking centre stage at the free lunchtime performances right in the heart of the city.

The concert series is jointly organised by Waikato University’s Conservatorium of Music and the Council.

Each recital showcases some of the Conservatorium’s music students, along with performances by staff and visiting musicians.

"Junes Mayor's Music Matinee will feature top students playing some of the most wonderful music of all time including Brahms's C minor piano quartet, Ravel's Piano Trio in A minor and tempting morsels to whet the appetite from Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro.

Performers include:
- cellist Matthias Balzat who has won all of New Zealand's top instrumental awards including first prizes at PACANZ NZ Young Performer of the Year 2016 and the National Concerto Competition 2015, as well as placing second in the Gisborne International Instrumental Competition.
- University of Waikato Concerto Competition winning violinist Rachel Twyman.
- award winning chamber music players Noelle Dannenbring and Alex Geary.
- nationally recognised soloists from the new Opera Studies course run by Dame Malvina Major.”

Matinee performances are held at 1pm on the first Friday of each month.

Gold coin donations are welcome and will go towards the purchase of a forte-piano for the Conservatorium.
