Māwai Hakona were a prize-winning Māori cultural performance group based in Upper Hutt who were active from the 1960s onwards. They performed internationally (including for the Queen at the opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973) and also released LPs and made television appearances.
Important in the promotion of Māori culture in the Upper Hutt region, they played a central role in establishing Ōrongomai Marae. An inclusive organisation who counted amongst their ranks significant numbers of Pākehā and Pacific Islanders, Māwai Hakona admirably reflected the spirit of cultural partnership embodied in the Treaty of Waitangi. Alongside historic photographs of the group performing, the Library’s exhibition also features original costumes and an audio-visual display.
The exhibition runs from Feb 4 to March 31, 2016.
