Through the hollers and wailing pines of the Appalachian Mountains, you will hear the haunting sounds of the banjo and fiddle or knee slapping shouts from an old-time string band. In New Zealand there is only one such band, Cotton Daisy Backstep. The group consists of Helena Triplett Faust on banjo/vocals, Naomi Middleton on guitar/vocals, Nick Bollinger on bass and Eddy Abraham on fiddle.
On a visit to the States Helena learned to play the banjo from her father and spent the next 10 years in West Virginia steeped in the local traditions and performing with ‘The Raincrows.’ On moving to Wellington last year Cotton Daisy Backstep was formed with Naomi (studied old-time guitar in North Carolina), Nick (past member of the iconic kiwi band ‘The Windy City Strugglers’) and Ed (learning fiddle from touring old-time musicians).

With their 1930s dress and high lonesome harmonies Cotton Daisy Backstep revive the old songs of the pioneers, haunting ballads, tales of moonshine, and old gospel thumpers. They bring a truly unique experience to NZ audiences; this is the mountain roots of Americana. Performing for the Levin Folk Music Club at 7.30 pm, Friday 13th May at the Scottish Society Hall.

Club members $5.00. Non Members $10.00 All Welcome
