Heritage New Zealand is teaming up with Underground Overground Archaeology to recreate an excavation pit in The Arts Centre, one of the most significant collections of heritage buildings in New Zealand.

It’s your chance to be an archaeologist and discover, recover and interpret surviving evidence of past human activity.

Archaeologists are historical detectives. When you dig, you become a time traveller. Artefacts provide clues and evidence of our ancestors’ lives.

Bones and bottles, pipes and plates, tools and toys - all are parts of a jigsaw puzzle that reveal the mysteries of the past.

This outdoor activity and exhibition are suitable for all ages. It's part of BECA Heritage Week, run by the Christchurch City Council.
