Bringing it on home to the Lido

Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band are heading to their favourite Wellington The Lido Cafe on Saturday 20th February to bring home the boogie and blues.

Wellington based Laura Collins is first and foremost an entertainer, she’s all about the show and having a good time with the audience. She likes to move between ballsy blues and soulful ballads, making them her own. You’ll hear Nina Simone, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt and Laura's take on some unsuspecting men, Muddy Waters and BB King amongst them.

Laura says "Blues comes straight from the heart and that’s just how I like it, it’s accessible, joyful, heart full music and not only that it makes me want to move – what’s not to like?”

Laura's band are all long time players in the Wellington and National music scene.
Wayne Mason, well-known singer songwriter, is also one hell of a fine boogie piano player and we’re lucky enough to have him ‘firing it up’ on our behalf. Think Fats Domino, think Dr John, think Professor Longhair and you’ll be in the right honky tonk.

On guitar John O’Connor )is making it sing, a man of long time fame in the Wellington music scene (he's worked with Kiri Te Kanawa, Mark Williams, BB King, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. He’s a pedal free man, it’s all in his fingers – just masterful.

In the engine room George Barris on upright bass (in his early days part of ‘Highway) is joined by Pete Cogswell on the ‘back porch’ drums. “Having a pulled back rhythm section just allows us to be lower volume and bring a really warm vocal led sound. We’ll still 'bring out the boogie' though, this band just swings".

Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band, Saturday 20th February, show from 8.30 - 10.30pm, come for dinner or drinks.

Quote from Review from Manawatu Standard June 2nd, 2014

"The Back Porch Band had a great feel about it ranging from solidly funky to gloriously gospel, their backing vocals superbly supporting this sassy songstress. With each number given a highly original blues sound, this band fairly rocked the joint..."
