As a young man, René Jules Lalique revolutionised jewellery with his opulent Art Nouveau designs. Then at middle age, he shifted his focus to glass and became the most celebrated glass maker of the Art Deco period.

Elegant forms, lavish ornamentation, and an enduring love of nature are common threads that run though Lalique’s extensive output spanning more than six decades.

While his handcrafted jewellery was characterised by sinuous line and a high level of detail, Lalique’s glass vases embody the simplified forms of the modern age, in which the machine was embraced and methods of mass production refined.

This month MTG, Hawke’s Bay’s award winning museum, opens an exhibition of vases by René Lalique from the Jack C Richards Collection. This celebration of the enchanting Art Deco vases of the master glass maker is timed to coincide with the region’s annual Art Deco festival.
