Purposely considered lines navigate the surface – the points where they intersect create tension, volume and movement – in a series of large-scale drawings by Katharina Jaeger.

Everyday objects, a pair of pants, a ribcage, hands and drapery are re-worked into a ‘language of observation’. Jaeger’s precise drawings shift the ordinary or mundane into the realm of the ethereal where their presence and movement is fleeting and worthy of recording.

Tracking is part of a suite of drawings started in 2008. Back then, before the Canterbury Earthquakes, the city had many large studio spaces, the sort of creative laboratories we now only dream of. In Katharina's previous large studio space, works of art and collected materials filled the building, surrounding her and influencing new works – the starting point of this series. After the loss of that studio, she continued the series in various locations around the city. Drawing’s immediacy made it possible for her to set up for short times in these temporary spaces. An ongoing interest in everyday objects grew to include her own movements and gestures, and her work evolved into a visual archive of objects and their motions.
