Ka U ki Matanuku is the first line from a proverb said by Ngati Tuwharetoa ancestor, Ngatoroirangi, when he arrived in this area.

Ka U ki Matanuku
Ka U ki Matarangi
Ka U ki tēnei whenua hei whenua
Mau e kai te manawa o tauhou

I arrive where an unknown earth is under my feet,
I arrive where a new sky is above me,
I arrive at this land, a resting place for me.
“Oh spirit of the earth” The stranger humbly offers his heart as food for thee.

This exhibition of artworks by both student and professional artists of Tuwharetoa descent reflect the significance of our local environment and its people. The Ka U ki Matanuku exhibition is part of Taupo Museum's annual Matariki celebrations.
