Press Release

Crows Feet Dance Collective is taking Judy Chicago’s famous 1970’s art installation Dinner Party as inspiration for its latest dance show.

Co-directed by Jan Bolwell and Annie Ruth, ex-director of Toi Whakaari, it is an exhilarating combination of dance, language, visual imagery and music.

Jan Bolwell states: ‘Judy Chicago, in her art making, celebrated famous women almost entirely within the Western tradition. We wanted to focus on famous women from our part of the world, Asia and the Pacific. There are lots of them! We have chosen ten women - all inspiring, controversial, loved and revered, also loathed and vilified. Some continue to live lives that shape our world. Starting with our very own Kate Sheppard and Dame Whina Cooper we looked across the Tasman Sea and chose Evonne Goolagong and Germaine Greer. From Asia we selected the Dowager Empress Ci Xi, Indira Gandhi, the remarkable Malala Yousafzai, and the indomitable Aung San Suu Kyi. Two mighty women, Queen Salote of Tonga and Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii, give voice to the Pacific.’

Over forty performers are in Hākari Dinner Party, from Crows Feet Dance Collective groups across the Wellington region. Each group has created a section of the hour-long dance theatre work.
