Giuseppe Castiglione an Italian Jesuit Painter at the Court of Three Qing Emperors.

An exhibition of print reproductions from the National Palace Museum, Taiwan. Curated by the Auckland Art Gallery Foundation Interns.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to view the exhibition of reproductions by Giuseppe Castiglione, a Jesuit with renaissance training who worked in the court of the three Qing Emperors.

The artistic career of Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) spanned the reigns of three Chinese emperors and left an indelible mark on world history. The significance of Castiglione’s work for our diverse global reality today is immense. His paintings vividly capture one of the first historical moments of intimate, extended, mutual exchange between the peoples and cultures of China and Europe.

The deft strokes of Castiglione’s Renaissance-trained brush on Chinese silk remind us of the beauty borne of cultural exchange and inspire us to undertake the same creative process as we learn to appreciate and engage with Auckland’s diverse cultures.

Exhibition opening night: September 27 5-7pm. All welcome.
